the question, "When you think about
Dungeons & Dragons, the cover of what product comes first to mind?" Had you asked me this question some years ago, the answer would have been very, very different. It is only because of my experiences over the last two years that I've come to realize how much I love that box. It is simple elegance just waiting for you to make it your own. This goes just the same for its excellent
sister daughter,
Labyrinth Lord.
Chello!
ReplyDeleteFor me it is the cover of the AD&D Monster Manual...the original with the cut view of the underground labyrinth.
You are correct sir. I got that for my birthday, and IIRC it fell on a Friday that year so I literally stayed up all night rolling up characters and reading and everything else.
ReplyDeleteOh yes... That was my gateway rpg, and my favorite rpg cover artwork of all time, no doubt about it.
ReplyDeleteThe Holmes Blue book cover. I'm so glad they didn't use that for the 4e thingie that everyone's ranting about.
ReplyDeleteFor me it would be the Red Box version. That's just the era of D&D that I grew up with.
ReplyDeleteEither the 1e PHB or the 1e DMG (non-orange spine version). The first (and to date the only) edition I've played.
ReplyDeleteThe Holmes Blue book cover.
ReplyDeleteThis was the version that I was introduced to the game with. However, the Moldvay set was the first one I actually owned and refereed with. If it hadn't been for that, my answer might have been Holmes.
For me, it's really difficult to choose between Otus' Basic cover and D.A.T.'s AD&D PHB cover. The former was my first impression, but I probably spent even more hours of my youth staring dreamily at the party looting the demonic fane of the lizard men.
ReplyDeleteIt was the Holmes Boxed set. That was my first one. The momochrome cover of B1 "In Search of the Unknown".....was our first foray into the game, besides the sample dungeon in the actual blue book. That cover to me says it all.....fond, fond memories.
